AB OBJECTIVE: Efforts to reduce the sexual risk behavior of injecting drug
users (IDUs) in Bangkok have continued since shortly after the rapid
spread of HIV in this group in 1988. There also have been recent
programs to reduce sexual risk behavior among the entire population. We
compared sexual risk behavior among IDUs in 1989 and 1993. METHODS: Risk
behavior-HIV seroprevalence surveys were conducted among IDUs recruited
from Bangkok drug treatment programs in 1989 (n = 601) and in 1993 (n =
200). RESULTS: Demographic and drug use characteristics of IDUs were
similar over time, with the exception of an increase in mean age from 30
yrs. to 32 yrs. There were strong similarities in sexual risk behavior
patterns over time. 61% in 1989 and 65% in 1993 reported either sexual
abstinence or always using condoms in the 6 months prior to interview.
38% and 36% reported sex with a primary partner in the 6 months prior to
interview, of these 12% and 11% reported always using condoms. 14% and
13% reported sex with casual partners, of these 35% and 52% reported
always using condoms. None of these differences were statistically
significant. CONCLUSIONS: Despite increased prevention program efforts,
a modest amount of sexual risk behavior has remained among IDUs in
Bangkok over the last four years.
